Doré, Gustave

(1832-1883)
   illustrator, engraver, and painter
Gustave Doré, whose highly imaginative engravings accompanied many important 19th-century literary works, was born in Strasbourg. At age 15, he drew caricatures for the Parisian Journal pour rire, for Caricature, and for CHARIVARI. He produced nearly 10,000 illustrations for newspapers, and was above all known as a book illustrator. In that area especially, he showed his inexhaustible imagination. His energetic graphics reveal a sometimes vivid fantasy (Pantagruel, 1854; Les contes drolatiques, 1856), as well as a romantic and visionary lyricism (L'Enfer de Dante, 1861; La Bible, 1866). He practiced lithography and engraving with a great mastery, and excelled in conveying great dramatic action and mysterious and even gloomy settings.
